New Hope’s Math Lab provides a place where students can get the support they need to succeed in their study of mathematics. This tutorial is quite unlike New Hope's other tutorials--instead of using one set text or curriculum which all the students progress through together as a group, Math Lab enables each student to bring in the math text they use at home and to get help, explanations and encouragement as they work through their math curriculum at their own pace.
Math Lab is a true homeschooling environment and, as such, it has some significant advantages over a standard “math class:”
- Students in Math Lab don't need to struggle to go at a faster pace just to keep up with other students or a textbook. They can work at whatever pace is comfortable for them.
- Students can get individualized attention to their math trouble spots, get weak areas shored up, or get missing concepts reintroduced without feeling that others are waiting for them.
- Students can get questions answered and concepts re-explained until they have achieved mastery of a concept. In this way, they can move forward with greater confidence and build a solid foundation for their future work in mathematics.
- As in a true home school setting, students in Math Lab also get the advantage of seeing explanations for other students' math lessons. Sometimes this means they get to see a review of a topic they have already studied, and sometimes this means they get a sneak peek at material which they have not had yet. Either way they benefit.
Math Lab offers families of both middle school and high school students support for many different kinds of situations:
- If you and your student have always struggled with mathematics over the course of your homeschooling, we can offer both of you the support you need to turn things around.
- If you feel your student was fine with elementary mathematics but began to struggle when they reached algebra or geometry, then we can offer regular targeted assistance to help your student make a successful transition to high school mathematics.
- If you and your student have trouble completing a math course in the time you want, we can offer your student scheduling help and accountability.
- Even if you feel that your student is working well but not understanding their math as well as they should, we can help. At Math Lab, our goal is to give our students the depth of understanding they need to do their math with confidence.
