Foundations of Western Civilization encourages students to dig deeply into the cultural, intellectual and political history that has framed both Europe and America -- our institutions, beliefs, age-old social tensions, as well as the rich legacy of the Ancient and Early Medieval thinkers and texts. Students will read, write, research and discuss topics such as: democracy, architecture, the professional military, medicine, law, organized religion, drama, and important aspects of daily life in the ancient Mediterranean region -- the epi-center of the Ancient and Medieval world. Students will take notes on lectures, engage in vibrant class discussion, read both primary and secondary sources, and write extensively throughout the course. Small research projects will complement the course work, and enable students to do the real work of historians. There will be occasional supplementary handouts, in addition to assigned reading.
