Course Description

This high school tutorial will explore the fundamentals of chemistry. Topics we will learn together include atomic structure, the periodic table, chemical bonding, stoichiometry, gas laws, solutions, acids and bases, chemical reactions and equilibrium, and thermochemistry. Along the way, we will discuss the history of the field of chemistry and also discover connections between chemistry and other subjects such as biology, literature, and ethics.

In addition to in-class and home activities, students will have the privilege of doing a lab experiment quarterly at Gordon College. The labs will investigate particular topics covered in the tutorial and will also serve to develop lab skills. In conjunction with these experiments, students will prepare for college science by learning and/or honing their skill of writing formal lab reports.

Assessment of learning will embrace a spectrum of learning and testing styles.
