A General Note Concerning All New Hope Art Tutorials

The goal of all New Hope’s art tutorials is to expose students to the richness of the history of art, to have them experiment with the many possibilities of visual expression, and then to help them find their own ‘artistic voice.’ Each student begins where they are artistically at that time and is helped to acquire enough technical mastery to be able to bring their artistic vision to concrete form. Students of the same age may vary greatly in their artistic ability, and all are encouraged to grow and develop to the best of their abilities, to take a chance and to become more creative than they thought they could. This creative risk-taking is done in a “let’s try something new” atmosphere in which students feel free to create and grow. The artistic growth stops, however, when there is no technique to support their ideas. We believe students need to be given artistic skills, and often that involves hard work; so we weave technique and creative expression together in our tutorials, with students expressing themselves in their own unique way.

Studio Art II is a continuation of Studio Art I: a study and analysis of drawing and color. The students will gain new skills and build on basic conceptual skills in various methods, compositions and color theories.

This course involves more in-depth projects that will be assigned in a variety of media. The students will acquire creative problem-solving skills, media manipulation, and quality craftsmanship. They will explore color as a means of personal expression through various media such as watercolor, pastels, and painting. The students will investigate issues of composition, surface and texture, and light and dark.

We will continue to sample a range of subject matter including still life, nature, architecture, and the human figure study and anatomy. The course will also expand students’ knowledge of three-dimensional art. Using a variety of materials and techniques, students will investigate sculptural design with wood, wire, and clay.

This tutorial has the flexibility to focus on producing works fit for portfolios for students who want to explore the possibility of developing a portfolio.

Students will keep a sketchbook for daily journaling. The end of the year final project will be a life size self portrait. Individual and group critiques are provided.
