A CREATIVE WORKSHOP for 8- to 10-year-olds
taught by Heather Warriner
one 90-minute session on Mondays from January 25 to March 8
10:45 am – 12:15 pm
DRAWING WORKSHOP
Tutor: Heather Warriner
CONCEPT: This 6-week workshop for 8-10 year-olds will introduce drawing basics and teach young artists the habit of sketching and keeping an ongoing sketchbook. In a fun and creative environment, students will draw a wide variety of subjects, including objects from nature, fruit & veggies, mechanical objects, and more. To stress the importance of using reference, this workshop will focus on drawing from life. The lessons taught during these six weeks will be the perfect preparation for future workshops, including the Nature Sketchbook Workshop, scheduled for the Spring.
LEVEL: 8-10 year olds
TIME: Six 1 ½ hour sessions:
DAY ONE: BASIC DRAWING AND OBSERVATION SKILLS
- Introduction to the Drawing Workshop
- We will discuss drawing basics, and practice these skills by beginning with familiar objects – fruits and vegetables. The children will experiment with several different techniques that teach observation, including blind contour drawing, and modified contour drawing.
DAY TWO: BASIC DRAWING AND PERSPECTIVE
- We will continue to practice basic drawing skills by using natural materials as our subject matter.
- In addition, by switching to using simple cube- and sphere-shaped objects as the subjects, we will begin to discuss perspective.
- The students will learn some of the rules of drawing cubes and other linear objects.
DAY THREE: MECHANICAL OBJECTS
- The students will work from kitchenware and hardware pieces, as examples of mechanical subject matter. The intricacy of these objects will give the students a chance to add more detail to their drawings.
DAY FOUR: OBJECTS OF PERSONAL INTEREST
- The children will be asked to bring 3 or 4 objects from home that they find interesting (Toys, stuffed animals, figurines, and other objects with imagery already on them are not the best choices. Household items and mechanical items work much better.)
- They will then explore these items in depth, drawing them from several different angles and perspectives.
DAY FIVE: DRAWING SIMPLE STILL-LIFES
- A simple still-life will be setup for the children to use as their subject matter for drawing.
- Because the still-life will include more than one object they will need to practice drawing objects in relationship to one another.
DAY SIX: STILL-LIFES (continued)
- We will work from a different still-life, focusing again on the importance of observation and drawing objects in relationship to once another.
- The students will be encouraged once again to bring 1-2 objects from home, to add to the still-life.
