Gallaudet Howard received her BA in English Literature from Harvard University, her Master's in Nursing from Yale University, and her MFA in fiction writing from the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop. She has taught undergraduate fiction writing at the University of Iowa, and has also worked as a nurse practitioner and nursing tutor in a hospital on the Ganges in India, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, and, randomly, in an ER in Cedar Rapids. She currently works as a freelance writer and editor, and her work has appeared in The Times Of India, America magazine, Salon.com, and Alpinist. She and her husband, a physician, have two small but very loud boys.

"I grew up watching my father, an English professor and writer, sit at his typewriter banging out books, and for as long as I can remember I've wanted to do the same thing. Writing is, of course, an art, but it is also a craft which can be taught and practiced. I have found that the more I do both, the more I learn to see the world around me, and the more I am inspired to try to understand, and then communicate. Learning to say what I mean with power, precision and flexibility, and teaching others to do the same, has been one of the great challenges and joys of my life.

My own experiences in writing workshops have shown me how valuable a safe, encouraging, challenging classroom community can be for writers learning to find their voices. It is essential that we as writers be able to push ourselves and learn from mistakes while we strive to master the technical side of the craft, and my goal is to create a place where students learn to support each other as they challenge themselves, and discover the joy of their own voices."
